Frequently Asked Questions

Will this project take longer than the projected time frame outlined in the estimate?

It is always hard to say for sure that your remodeling project will be completed by a specific date. A reputable contractor will let you know during the estimation phase of your project that the timetables is a best estimate based on the work to be done.

Factors to consider that may lengthen your project are:

  • Changes made to the original plan
  • Unknown delays once the project is underway based on what is found behind walls, under floorboards, hidden behind ceilings, etc.
  • Delays in receiving materials due to weather, backorders, shortages, etc.
  • Weather delays such as storms, rain, power outages

A reputable contractor will inform you of situations that arise and talk with you at every phase of your project.

Will this project cost more than the estimated cost?

The estimate/contract is based on the work to be completed. This should be as detailed as possible with itemized listings. It should include materials, labor, debris removal, tax if required, and a timetable for work to be completed and when you are expected to give the contractor payments.

Costs will vary should changes be made to the original plan and for unforseen problems once the project is underway.

Your contractor should discuss changes in costs with you and offer options if appropriate. A "Change Order" should be provided so that there is a record of changes to the original contract.

During the remodeling process, will I have to vacate my home?

This depends entirely on your remodeling project. In most cases, you should not have to leave your premises. Your contractor should not leave you and your family without basics such as heat, gas/electricity or running water for extended periods of time.

Your contractor should also be consistently updating you as to the status of your project and when you may be inconvenienced from basic necessities and for how long.

Of cours, there are always unforseen problems that may arise, but your contractor should also keep you appraised of the situation and how that affects the timeline for completion of your project.
